Ferrets are such fun, entertaining little rascals, it’s hard to imagine them being unhappy or depressed. Yet it happens to a lot of these animals. To keep your pet cheerful enough to dance around the room, try these helpful tips for a happy ferret.
Helpful tip number one:
Meet your ferret’s physical needs. This seems like a no-brainer, yet rescues and shelters are full of animals whose owners didn’t understand how to take care of them. Physical needs for a ferret include:
- Proper food, preferably premium ferret food or a really good kitten food, available on demand throughout the day.
- Plenty of fresh water.
- Meaty treats.
- Lots and lots of exercise for body and mind.
- A large enough cage or play room for your ferret to stretch and run around.
Helpful tip number two:
Make sure your ferret is safe. Again, you would think this was an obvious tip, but it is amazing how many people do not properly protect their ferrets. Safety concerns include:
- Ferret-proof your house. It takes only a moment for a ferret to crawl into a dangerous situation.
- Never leave your ferret unsupervised with other pets. Even a dog or cat who seems to like your ferret’s company can suddenly turn on it.
- Never take your ferret outdoors without a harness and leash attached. Ferrets who disappear rarely make it back to their owner.
- Walk softly when ferrets are running loose. One misstep can easily kill them.
Helpful tip number three:
Understand how important you are in your ferret’s life. Your pet craves your affection, your attention, and the opportunity to perform for you, all of which make you indispensable. Ferrets are high-maintenance in the way they really need every spare moment you can give them, to play with them or just pet them. Meet your ferret’s social connection needs by:
- Spending as much with your pet as possible each day.
- Providing plenty of interesting toys for your ferret to investigate and play with.
- Adding another ferret to the household, so the animals can entertain and cuddle with each other while you’re unavailable.
Helpful tip number four:
Prepare for the problems that will accompany your ferret through life. Ferrets are often dumped by owners who are unwilling or can’t afford to take care of their pet’s medical needs. Older ferrets need expensive health maintenance more often than not. Prepare for this ahead of time by:
- Setting aside an emergency medical fund. Ferret problems are often dealt with by surgery, and an operation can cost $300 or more. If the money is already waiting for use in these situations, you won’t find yourself wondering if you can afford to keep your ferret.
- Practicing preventive maintenance. While there are many diseases and illnesses that strike ferrets without any hope of prevention, take the time to help your pet avoid the easy things, such as keeping up the vaccinations for rabies and canine distemper.
Following these helpful tips for a happy ferret will make life with this complex little animal more fun, more rewarding and less stressful.
